This thesis goes into detail on the inner workings of BOINC, John the Ripper, and the merger of the two programs. The merger of these two programs enables companies and diverse groups to verify the strength of their password security policy. John the Ripper is a password cracking program that takes a password file and attempts to determine the password by a guess and check method. The BOINC structure supports any system that requires large amounts of data to be processed without changing significant portions of the structure. BOINC is a distributed data processing system that incorporates client-server relationships to generically process data. Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing BOINC is the conduit to this significant source of processing power and John the Ripper is the key. Not a big deal but it makes me pin the installer to my dashboard.Abstract: Password cracking requires significant processing power which in todays world is located at a workstation or home in the form of a desktop computer. Upon awaking and restarting BOINC, I have to use the BOINC installer again each time to correct the permissions. I found that when I turn off the project, close up my laptop (sleep) and go home. I don't run the project all the time, only for a few hours each day. I did this for my laptop as I have an internal SSD drive and I didn't want to burn it out with all the writing and rewriting, so I attached an external drive (much easier to replace and cheaper). There is a new issue that I found but it is easily resolved. This time when I moved BOINC Data (prior to joining any project) it allowed me to continue and finish the move and BOINC started without any problems. What resolved the problem (I had joined a project before I moved the data folder) was to delete everything and start again. Neither allowed me to complete the move and get BOINC up and running. I moved it later to the project data after a friend suggested that I point it there. Initially I did have it in the root of the BOINC's data directory. Tried BOINC installer and still no joy.īOINC Ownership or permissions are not set properly please Īt this point I tried run BOINC and got the permissions error again. Zalsters-Computer:_beta Zalster$ sudo chgrp boinc_project* Zalsters-Computer:_beta Zalster$ sudo chown boinc_master* I removed the space between the end of the word and * and got the following Note nothing happen when I typed in the commands. Zalsters-Computer:_beta Zalster$ sudo chgrp boinc_project * Zalsters-Computer:_beta Zalster$ sudo chown boinc_master * One of my fellow crunchers tried to help (thanks TBar) but I still can't get it to work. I've tried moving the Mac_SA_Secure.sh to Documents on my internal HD posting the path, I've moved it to the external HD thinking maybe I need it in the BOINC Data and even into the _beta folder and posting the path. I've tried the above and the second time type N but it still does the same thing. If I launch the BOINC installer, it completes and then I still get the error about permissions and needing to reinstall. And spent several hours trying to solve it before I came across this, which solved the problem and allowed me to install BOINC. Zalsters-Computer:_beta Zalster$ sudo sh /Users/Zalster/Desktop/Mac_SA_Secure.shĬhanging directory /Volumes/Seagate/BOINC Data/projects/_beta file ownership to user and group boinc_master - OK? (y/n)Ĭan't find switcher application in directory /Volumes/Seagate/BOINC Data/projects/_beta exitingĪt this point I've tried relaunching BOINC and get the permissions need to be fixed. Zalsters-Computer:~ Zalster$ cd /Volumes/Seagate/BOINC\ Data/projects/_beta Enter the following in the Terminal application: Run the script Mac_SA_Secure.sh to set up proper permissions at the new locations. Macintosh aliases created with the Finder will not work! IMPORTANT: you must create symbolic links. However after that is where I run into problems. I've been able to move the data to an external HD and was able to make the link in the Application Support. I'm following the instructions at the following
